Frequently Asked Questions

Will my group hunt with others?

No, your group (minimum size of 4) will not hunt with others that are sharing the lodge at the same time. Each group has its own guide/guides and likely will not even see the other groups during the hunting day.

Where do I get a license?

You can purchase a license online ahead of time from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks website. The Runnings hardware and sporting goods store in Gregory also sells licenses in-person.

What license do I need?

There are two choices, depending on when your hunt occurs. If any part of your hunt happens before the third Saturday in October, the 5-Day Non-resident Shooting Preserve License is the way to go. If your hunt starts on the third Saturday of October or later, you should purchase a Non-resident Small Game license.

What will the weather be like?

We wish we knew! The northern prairie see climate extremes of all types. Please monitor the forecast as your hunt gets close. Particularly watch out for wet conditions. Rain does not happen often but when it does we see a lot of hunters that wish they brought some rain gear!

Will I have my own bedroom in the lodge?
Most likely yes. The lodge has 18 bedrooms and we do our best to avoid having over 18 guests on any particular night. Twelve of the bedrooms have 2 twin beds, but we usually have only one guest in each room.

What is the typical arrival/departure schedule?

Most commonly, groups arrive on the afternoon before their first hunting day and leave after breakfast on the morning after their last hunting day. Certain openings may require an alternate schedule, we'll let you know if that is the case.

What drinks are provided?

There is a refrigerator in the lodge with bottled water and soda, and the same can be found in our daily hunt staging area (the Sale Barn). Bottled water will be on the busses during the day also. We also provide wine at dinner and a full bar (no charge) during a special "cookout" meal on one of your nights.

What are the typical hunting hours?

Usually you'll hit the field at 10:00 and are back at the lodge by 3:30. There will be an hour lunch break in there somewhere.

Do you get a lot of repeat business?

Absolutely! Take 2025, for example: 33 separate parties hunted with us and only 2 of those were first-timers. 10 of the parties were on year 20 or higher! We think that says a lot!

Do you release any pheasants?

Yes. Three of the seven parcels of land we hunt are registered as "shooting preserves". Each of those have a minimum stocking requirement to legally qualify for the program. This designation allows us to start hunting prior to the "traditional" pheasant opener (third Saturday in October) and gives us the ability to exceed the 3-bird daily limit (when parties are interested in doing so).

Will you work with inexperienced hunters?

We do all the time. Many people have shot their first pheasant (or first bird of any kind) here.

Is there a place we can do some warm up shooting?

Yes. We have a complimentary guest shooting range that features electronic clays throwers. We encourage you to give it a try before your hunt starts. Targets are included, but you'll need some target ammunition (available for purchase on-site or in Gregory).

Do you provide guns?

We are unable to due to insurance requirements.

What ammunition do you recommend?

12 gauge: Standard "high brass" #5 or #6 field loads. 3" magnum loads are not necessary.

20 gauge: 3" magnum or standard "high brass" #5 or #6 field loads.
